FAST software puts the right data in the right place at the right time to improve performance and reduce costs in tiered environments. FAST uses simplified policies to manage storage resources based on built-in automation and intelligence.

FAST can optimize placement of data at either the volume/LUN or the Sub-LUN level. 

FAST moves entire volumes/LUNs between tiers.

Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools (FAST VP) promotes only the active portions of a volume/LUN to Enterprise Flash drives. This gives you the best utilization from limited Flash drive capacity. Additionally, FAST VP also moves inactive portions of a volume/LUN to SATA drives, so you can use both Flash and SATA together in Tier 1 environments. 

FAST VP gives you the optimal combination of the best cost per IOP with fastest response time benefits of Flash, offset by the best price per gigabyte afforded by SATA drives. It also enables you to use different mixes of Flash, Fibre Channel, and SATA to meet a broad range of application performance targets more efficiently.
